Cell Theory

Definition: The Cell Theory has 3 parts.
1) All living things are made of one or more cells
2) Cells are the basic units of structure and function in organisms
3) All cells arise from existing cells

Analogy: The cell theory is like a religion because they both include beliefs and ideas.
Central Vacuole

Definition: Large, membrane-bound space in a plant cell that stores water and may contain many substances, including ions, nutrients, and wastes

Analogy: The central vacuole is like a refrigerator because they both store nutrients, minerals, and water

Cilia

Definition: Short, hairlike structures that protrude from the surface of some eukaryotic cells

Analogy: Cilia is like a fish's tail because they both help the organism move around in its environment.
Compound Light Microscope

Definition: light microscope that uses two lenses

Analogy:n A compound light microscope is like a pair of binoculars because they both provide a closer look in an area.

Endocytosis

Definition: The movement of a substance into a cell by a vesicle

Analogy: Endocytosis is like a vacuum because something enters both of them.
Equilibrium

Definition: A condition in which the concentration of a substance is equal throughout a space

Analogy: Equilibrium is like a sea saw at the park because they both maintain balance

Eukaryotic

Definition: An organism whose cells have a nucleus

Analogy: A eukaryote is like a house because they both have different components that allow them to function.
Hypotonic Solution

Definition: A solution that causes a cell to swell because of osmosis

Analogy: A hypotonic solution is like a balloon because they both expand and explode.

Mitochondria

Definition: An organelle that harvests energy from organic compounds to make ATP

Analogy: The mitochondria is like a battery because they both provide energy.
Osmosis

Definition: the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane

Analogy: Osmosis is like a rocket because the rocket travels through the atmosphere just like water travels through a permeable membrane.
